An NGO in the Taj city "Help Agra" launched, recently, a unique initiative in the form of a website Unidentifieddeadbodies.in, which will show all the available details culled from police records, alongwith photos of unidentified dead bodies.
What normally happens in practice is that police cops do not wait long enough for the relatives or make any extra effort to contact people who would know something about the dead body recovered, Ashok Goyal, head of the 125 year old Kshetra Bajaja Samiti which looks after the Taj Ganj shamshan ghat (cremation ground plus electric crematorium) told Agratoday.in.
For many years we have been collecting data and seeking assistance from government agencies which did not respond, Goyal added.
"If even one family is benefited by our service, we will feel our mission has been accomplished. Our aim is to maintain a register of unknown and unclaimed dead bodies which are kept in mortuaries of Government hospitals and other corporate institutions etc. with the assistance of the police and medical authorities to take photographs and to collect all particulars of the dead bodies with photographs for public awareness, to maintain recorded library consisting of photographs of dead bodies avail particulars of unclaimed dead bodies. Such may be used to find out easily to their families," Goyal said.
The organisation performs the last rites of unclaimed dead bodies according to their religion, if known, and also extends financial assistance for performing the last rites.
SP railways Tehsildar Singh and SP GRP Devesh Pandey said "we are providing all the inputs from 12 different points in the division including Delhi-Agra route, Mainpuri, Aligarh."
The dead bodies will be photographed and all the details relevant would be posted on the website which has been linked with police websites in different states.
