In 2012, of the total 5814706, the number of foreign visitors was 780506.

These figures have been obtained from the sale of tickets by the Agra Development Authority and the Archaeological Survey of India.

Entry to the Taj Mahal is free for children below 15 years.

"If you take into account the number of children, school groups, often they are more than the adults, the number of visitors to the Taj Mahal would cross ten million," says handicrafts exporter Abhinav Jain, at the Taj Mahal's eastern gate. Jain suggests there should be a proper record of actual number of entrants to know the impact of increasing human load on the fragile monument.
