In Mathura celebrations began early morning with a Kalash Yatra and pooja at the Tapobhoomi from where the Mission started. The Methodist Church campus ground is the centre of thousands of Gayatri Parivar members pouring in. Agra mayor Anjula Singh Mahaur led the procession. One of the organizers, IS Pandey said "programmes were being organized at 4000 branches of the Gayatri Parivar. Mritunjaya Sharma, son of Pt. Sri Ram Sharma hoisted the flag in the morning at the Tapobhoomi. Later in the evening there will be a colorful procession with 15 tableaux depicting the seminal ideas of the founder."
Pt. Sri Ram Sharma is credited with having authored more than 3000 books and monographs, explaining the finer aspects of Hinduism. "He evolved a whole new style of life, philosophy and prescribed solutions for all the ills facing mankind," said a follower Abhishek Mehrotra.
The celebrations will continue round the year at hundreds of branches of the Gayatri Parivar which claims millions of active members.
Even as celebrations began in Mathura, Haridwar, and in some major towns of India, Pt. Sri Ram Sharma's birth place in Amal Kheda presented a deserted look, in urgent need of care and maintenance. The Gayatri Peeth is annually visited by lakhs of devouts. The Peeth is holding a series of programmes for the next three days beginning with a Kalash Yatra Sunday, an "akhand Jaap (non-stop 24 hour chanting of the Gayatri Mantra) followed by Deep Dan and Yagna. A large number of devotees from England, US, and various European countries are reaching Amal Kheda where arrangements have been made for the stay of 10,000 people.
Kartar Singh, of the Vishwa Gayatri Parivar said simultaneous programmes are being held at all the centers and will continue for three days.
Though Pt. Sri Ram Sharma was born on September 20, 1911, his spiritual birth day is celebrated on Basant Panchmi.
