Half the city has been without water for more than two days. The power supply was suspended for long hours after several sub stations tripped. Three days ago transmission grid and power grids tripped bringing power supply to a total halt. Power supply was disrupted to Mathura, Firozabad and Hathras also.

The private discom Torrent Power, has had to face the wrath of people with a series of protest marches. The Agra Water Works, more than a century old, blames the erratic power supply for the unannounced disruption of supply. "A few areas have not received water due to leakages in the pipelines which are being plugged," said a senior official of the Jal Sansthan.

The frequent power supply breakdowns have been attributed to "cuts from Lucknow," according to Torrent spokesperson. Pankaj Saxena, AGM, PR told media persons that due to extreme cold "the number of complaints has gone up and its taking time to address all faults."

The demand for power has peaked due to increase in agricultural operations, running pumps to water the fields. "In the city areas too the consumption has increased phenomenally as everyone has been using heaters," as mercury has touched a new low in the past ten days.
