Husain was noticed for the first time in 1947 when he won an award at the annual exhibition of the Bombay Art Society. Subsequently he was invited by Souza to join the Progressive Artist's Group. A great deal of experimentation in the early years led to some remarkable works The Spider And The Lamp and Zameen and Man. By 1955 he was one of the leading artists in India and had been awarded the Padma Shri.

Raza has won many awards throughout his lifetime: including the Gold Medal of the Bombay Art Society in 1948; a French Government Scholarship to the École des Beaux Arts in 1950; the French Prix de la Critique in 1956; a Visiting Lectureship at the University of California in Berkeley; he was awarded the Padma Shri by the President of India in 1981 and was elected Fellow of the Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi in 1983.

Tanjore paintings are eponymously named after a style of painting that flourished in the temple town of Tanjore (Tanjavur) in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Stylistically believed to have emerged in the 16th century during the reign of Nayaka rulers, the art received fresh impetus and patronage in the late 17th century with the coming of Maratha rule.

Sammakka Sarakka Jathara or Medaram Jathara is the largest tribal religious congregation in the country. The biannual Jathara takes place at Medaram village of Tadvai Mandal in Warangal district, in Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh.
