Don’t be influenced by free ration policy, says Mayawati

Agra: Addressing a big rally at the GIC ground Saturday afternoon Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati lashed out at the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party, the Congress, and the Samajwadi Party.

Mayawati told her supporters that the free ration to the poor was not a favour by the BJP or Narendra Modi. It was the taxpayers' money. "So do not be influenced by this free ration policy," she added.

The Congress and the BJP along with its allies were not pro-poor, pro-Dalits, or pro-Muslims. She said the BJP favoured the capitalists. Mayawati said winning the elections would not be so easy for the BJP this time. She targeted the Congress and the Samajwadi Party for false promises.

She said the BSP had given tickets to all sections of the society. The candidate for the Fatehpur Sikri seat is Ram Nivas Sharma, while for the Agra city reserved seat, the candidate is Pooja Amrohi.

In her 30-minute long speech, which she read out, Mayawati asked her supporters to remain united and vote for the party candidates, without fear or influence of the BJP.

Though the vote share of the BSP has increased or remained steady over the years, the party has not been able to win the Agra city seat. From the Fatehpur Sikri constituency, the BSP candidate, Seema Upadhyaya, a Brahmin, won in 2009. Agra is generally called the Dalit capital of north India with a big chunk of Jatavs and other Scheduled castes, most engaged in the shoe industry.

Political observers were surprised at the big turnout at the rally in the scorching heat. However many felt the Bahujan Samaj Party candidates would only facilitate BJP victory in both constituencies.
