Don’t Divide Society… Urdu Media's Role Lauded


Naheed was addressing the inaugural ceremony of the Clava Fiesta, a literary festival organized by University Literary Club of the General Education Centre, Aligarh Muslim University on Effects of Media on Secularism.

She pointed out that presently media has entered in every sphere of the life and it can play a positive role in changing the society but its misuse can destroy the social fabric as well.

Naheed said that Muslims should present their side of story whenever negative coverage is undertaken by media. Speaking on the marriage and divorce in Muslim society, she said that number of divorce cases are less in Muslim society but media is using them to defame the Islam.

Prof. Humayun Murad said that no nation or community could progress unless it adopted modern education system. He said that media has a responsibility to save secularism in the country.

Vice President of AMUSU, Abdul Qadir Jilani said that in the present era, the role of media has become very important and the information technology is playing a vital part, so the public should get right information. He said that the General Education Centre can help students in this area. He laid emphasis on the female education.

Dr. Obaid Iqbal Asim said that Salman Rushdie is the creation of media and his writings are appreciated in an exaggerated manner whereas much more talented authors than Rushdie are there on literary horizon.

Presiding over the programme, Coordinator of GEC, Dr. Shakeel Samdani said that media has usurped the privacy of our lives and it is affecting whole society. He said that the media is largely representing the western culture and lifestyle as the major media houses are governed by Europeans and Americans. He said that Indian media is playing a positive role in strengthening secularism and democracy but, sometime it deviates from its goals only for some commercial interests and TRP. He said that the Urdu media in particular has contributed greatly to the freedom struggle and gave the slogan Inquilab Zindabad.

Student convener, Faisal Abbasi elaborated on the two-day programme. President of Club Dr. Fatima Shujatullah while welcoming the guests said that University Literary Club is continuously progressing and is engaged in enhancing talents of the students. The programme was conducted by Saima while Shafey Anwarul Haq proposed thanks to the guests.

The students of seventy Universities have participated in the programme. At the end of the programme, mementoes were presented to the guests. Prof. Abdul Aleem, Dr. Anwar Mohsin, Tausif Alam, Member of AMU Court and a large number of students were present in the programme.
