Agra Heat Proves Too Much For Visiting CWG Athletes

On Sunday almost 320 CWG guests visited the Taj Mahal. On the previous two days the number had not crossed 200 and the craftsmen at the Shilpgram festival were really dejected.

The sportspersons were taken in 20 odd buses to the Taj Mahal. "Groups from England, New Zealand, Canada, Sri Lanka, Malaysia came on Sunday," an official said.

The disabled (para) were also brought on wheel chairs and they had a wonderful time at the Taj, he added.

The Railways are running a special Shatabdi Express daily to bring CWG guests to Agra. Air conditioned Marco Polo buses have been arranged to transport the guests from the Agra Cantt railway station to the Shilpgram complex where gold carts are available to reach the Taj. After spending two hours at the Taj the guests are taken to hotel Jaypee Palace where they have lunch and relax for a while before returning to Delhi.

Agra Tourist Guides Association president Shamshuddin said "the heat is proving a dampner and some tourists have in fact had some minor health problems also." But now the number is picking up and we expect more tourists from the games village to come to Agra, he said.

At the Taj the sports persons have been totally relaxed and shown lots of interest in the architecture, the design and landscaping of the monument. "Some have posed for photos in yoga postures, and while doing aerobics and exercises. They are just enjoying themselves," said Vishal, a photographer at the Taj.
