‘Women Should Use Their Natural, Emotional Strength’

In just four years Tulika has groomed and chiseled the personalities of more than 1500 young boys and girls who are today definitely more confident of their abilities and their inborn traits.

Running her own little institute called Aryashri in Agra’s posh Lajpat Kunj colony, is her own way of expressing her passion and what she calls her “creative craziness.”

While still a teenager in her hometown Lucknow, she got fascinated towards developing communication skills and personality development techniques which she later perfected through her studies and interactive sessions with experts. She is quite at home teaching western etiquettes to marriageable girls, as also while practicing Yoga or indulging in theological studies which have turned her into an agnostic.

Talking to Agraplus Tulika said a well educated girl child becomes more focused and confident of taking the world on her own terms as economic independence does bring a degree of fulfillment and self contentment. “Maternal instincts are definitely the best gift of nature to a woman, but today’s world demands much more contribution from ladies who should exercise all the options they have. A woman has to strive for a balance between her home and her workplace,” Tulika says philosophically.

After being an active social worker as secretary of Akanksha for more than seven years, she is now totally disillusioned of the kind of social work women indulge in.

“Don’t just distribute sweets and blankets, visit slums, spend time in a hospital to talk to patients or do something substantial for society. Unfortunately most women take the easy recourse to distributing something and getting photographed by the media. Why can’t we have silent workers?” Tulika has not stopped doing her bit for the society but she firmly believes in the dictum: “the left hand should not know what the right hand does.”

Coming from a family of lawyers in Lucknow, Tulika is now married to a business man who has been supporting all her ventures and passions. The eldest of her grandfather’s barrister BK Dhaon defeated Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the only time he lost an election.

When not teaching communication skills, Tulika turns all her switches off and starts meditating. She has taken courses in Reiki, Art of Living, cooking, painting, social work. Now she is pursuing a course in English Literature.

As a teacher and also as a parent she wants a proper distance maintained, “otherwise that respect due to a guru or an elderly will not be there.” Through our personality development course we teach the students to maintain a proper balance between their external image and the internal processes. Appearance does matter in the beginning but once you start interacting with someone, it is what’s inside you that will help him judge your personality. Physique has to be maintained and groomed up and so have the softer skills like communication and conversational techniques.

“It is some of the smaller things that give away or open the windows to your personality like not presenting a visiting card properly or not introducing oneself in a dignified and matter of fact way, or even shaking hands without emotions or warmth. So many people don’t know that it is a lady’s privilege to extend her hand. Men shouldn’t be doing that. While talking on the phone we do not observe any rules of the game. The right thing would be to ask for the number and than introduce oneself.”

Asked who she thought had the most attractive personality today, Tulika gave full marks to Ratan Tata, Amitabh Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, even Barkha Dutt. “All these people have the right balance of external and internal content.”

Times have changed. Mahatma Gandhi in his dhoti would not appeal to anyone today. People want to see well dressed and groomed leaders, Tulika explains.
