But will this initiative to buy peace yield desired results? This is the big question everyone on the campus is asking.
The VC has given a written assurance to the agitating students that all their demands had been met and elections to the students union would be held as announced according to the recommendations of the Lyndoh Committee.
The detractors are saying that the President of India's show cause notice and the HRD ministry officials have snubbed the vice chancellor and seem in no mood to help him get out of the mess created by corruption charges.
"Dr. Azis is said to be making a last ditch efforts to cling to his chair by now seeking support of the AMU students," said a source. The VC is now desperately trying to woo the student leaders to stall any action against him, it is being said. "Insiders report that AMU administration has been attempting to break ice with a lobby of opponents so that they give him some breathing space and certain measure of success is said to have been achieved with the lifting of Dharna. As a fallout, major reshuffle in the administration is expected soon to accommodate candidates close to this lobby."
Vice chancellor's office Monday issued a statement clarifying the situation. "The agitating students of the Aligarh Muslim University called off their dharna following a discussion between the students sitting on dharna and the university administration.
In a meeting between 14 students and the university administration consisted of Registrar, Prof. VK Abdul Jaleel, Controller of Exams and Admission, Prof. Pervez Mustajab and OSD (Development), Prof. Akhtar Haseeb yesterday evening. It was resolved that election process of the AMU Students’ Union will be started from 3rd January 2011, as already announced. The election of the Students’ Union shall be held as per Lyngdoh Committee Recommendations and the Supreme Court’s order in letter and spirit. It was also decided that the election of representatives of the University Court will also be held along with AMU Students’ Union election. Every bonafide student is allowed to participate in the elections of the AMU Court. The suspension of five students involved in the dharna was revoked. These were Md. Ibraheem, Adeel Ahmad, Syed Umar Ahamd Qadri, Md. Osama Shamsi and Mushtaq Ahmad."
District authorities in Aligarh, DM Ravindra Naik, SSP Satendra Veer Singh played a key role in thrashing out the compromise formula. In a press statement the vice chancellor said, “We all should start a new chapter in AMU by becoming partners in regaining the glory of this institution”. He further said that the Students’ Union is being restored with a great hope that its activity will create a ‘union of hearts and minds’ in the AMU campus and we all live like ‘one family’.
The VC has to reply within 15 days to the presidential show cause notice. "If he can not give any satisfactory explanation why the University Court's meeting was postponed, he could be in real trouble," says a student leader not wanting to be identified. The Congress party, specially, Rahul Gandhi is looking for some fresh and new faces from the minority community for elections in future.
"For the UPA the student union elections are important. Some political interest groups are already busy trying to displace Prof Azis and bring in their own favorites," it is being said.
But for the time being, there is hope for some peace on the campus.
