Meera Shankar is from Agra, having studied at St. John's College before selection to IFS, says shoe exporter and formula car racer Harvijay Bahia, her classmate.
Bahia says, "we are all hurt the way Meera Shankar (formerly Choudhary) was shoddily treated in the name of search." Joining the chorus of protest are several social activists of the city.
BJP legislator Jagan Prasad Garg has also expressed deep concern and anger. "This is no way to treat Agra ki Beti. It is an insult to Indian womanhood. Government of India must take them to task. People in Agra are disgusted," Garg said.
Agra Vikas Manch, Citizens of Agra, Kshetra Bajaja Samiti, Jain Youth Society and several other groups have criticised American government and asked for public apology to Meera Shankar.
