Metro Rail Projects in 15 cities are under implementation

Hardeep Puri, minister of state for housing and urban affairs, has stated that several new cities are now aspiring to have Metro rail systems. Also, the state governments have been advised to prepare the detailed project report to submit. Regional Rapid Transit System projects comprising 373 kilometres between Delhi-Meerut, Delhi-Panipat and Delhi-Alwar are under planning. All new metro projects are approved subject to the provision of last mile connectivity for the passengers.

The ministry has released funds to various projects to the tune of Rs.9,286.09 crore in the year 2015-16, Rs.15,298.61 crore in the year 2016-17, Rs.13,956.23 crore in the year 2017-18 and Rs.7,481.28 crore in the year 2018-19.

Central government provides financial support for metro rail projects in the form of a grant to the states up to 10 per cent of project cost or in the form of 50-50 equity sharing with states.
