Heavy drinking may change your DNA

In the year 2016, more than three million people died from the harmful use of alcohol, according to a World Health Organization report. That is five per cent of all global deaths. More than three-quarters of alcohol-caused deaths were among men. The harmful use of alcohol also caused 5.1 per cent of the worldwide toll of disease and injuries.

By means of evaluating groups of moderate, binge and heavy drinkers, the scientists observed that the two genes had changed within the binge and heavy drinkers through an alcohol-prompted gene modification procedure known as Methylation.

The binge and heavy drinkers also confirmed reductions in gene expression or the rate at which those genes create proteins. These modifications expanded with greater alcohol intake.
