Rural employment has been a cornerstone of India’s social protection framework for nearly two decades. Since its enactment in 2005, the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, i.e. MGNREGA, played a key role in providing wage employment, stabilising rural incomes and creating basic infrastructure.

India’s real GDP grew 8.2 per cent in Q2 FY 2025-26, up from 7.8 per cent in Q1 and 7.4 per cent in Q4 of FY 2024-25.
