The PM was requested to allocate a special package for development of Agra, alongwith clearance for an international airport and a barrage on river Yamuna in Agra.
A member of the delegation, KC Jain, an advocate, suggested that the long continuing deadlock between the Culture and Environment ministries, on the resolution of the Taj Heritage Corridor imbroglio, be resolved and the directive of the Supreme Court on the issue be implemented without delay.
Giving the background Jain told Agratoday.in that the apex court in WP 13381 of 1984, had constituted an experts panel on December 5, 2005 to recommend steps to use more than 25 hectares of land reclaimed from the river-bed between the Taj Mahal and the Fort. This committee after detailed examination and field studies wanted the whole area covered with greenery which it said would yield huge environmental benefits.
"The cost of the eco-restoration of the site was estimated by the Committee to be about Rs. 42.5 crores (including managing Mantola drain and the second drain, close to the Taj). The Hon'ble Supreme Court accepted the above Report on 13.2.2006 and mandated for its implementation with the responsibility to oversee it to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). But, no implementation has so far been made. Instead, the ASI, in its affidavit, filed in the Supreme Court has suggested the implementation of the order by the Ministry of Environment & Forest. However, the issue remains pending."
The delegation urged the prime minister to intervene and bring the two ministries together to carry out the order of the apex court. "The site is strategic and had the potential to attract lakhs of tourists each year. The issue of the implementation of the Supreme Court's order dt. 13.2.2006, being inter-ministerial (Ministry of Environment & Forest Ministry of Culture), needs resolution by the kind intervention of the Prime Minister" delegation members told Agratoday.in.
