The railway and road traffic from Jaipur has been badly affected. Trains for Mumbai are being diverted from Mathura towards Agra Cantt and will proceed via Sawai Madhopur.
Already there is a long queue of trucks at the Fatehpur Sikri border. Tourist buses have stopped plying between Agra and Jaipur.
Hoteliers in Agra said there were anxious inquiries and some cancellations. "If the situation does not improve there could be large scale cancellation of hotel bookings by tourists planning Xmas and New Year celebrations in Taj city," said Rakesh Chauhan, president of the Agra Hotels and Restaurants Association.
Last year also, around this time, the Gujjar agitation had disrupted traffic between Agra and Jaipur.
The travel industry, handicrafts emporias, and hotels are jittery. "The flow of tourists in the golden triangle had just begun to pick up momentum. Unfortunately this agitation coinciding with festival season will be a big setback," said Surendra Sharma, owner, hotel Goverdhan.
Bird watchers are not able to travel to the famous Bharatpur bird sanctuary. The pressure on the Agra-Delhi highway has increased.
