In 2021, extreme weather events accounted for the maximum number of deaths in the states of Maharashtra, Odisha and Madhya Pradesh; and the largest number of districts were affected in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. This emerged from a presentation made by Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, director general of meteorology, India Meteorological Department, at a 4-day national conclave of journalists being organised by the Centre for Science and Environment.
