Much… much… further flash back to the Monica Lewinski– Bill Clinton saga. Despite the semen-soiled evidence, Hilary continues to be Mrs. Clinton and gave him public support at that time of public exposure.
Recently too , despite public washing of his dirty linen and exposure of his numerous affairs, wife of Tiger Woods has till date not filed for a divorce.
Let’s get certain facts straight. One, we are not talking here about suspected or alleged crime doers but people who have been convicted and declared to have committed the deed in the court of law. Secondly they have played with their position and the system in their favor. Thirdly, along with the crime perpetrated according to the Indian penal code, they have also done a crime in the human sense. They have betrayed and cheated their wives!
Thus, isn’t it shocking and incredibly surprising that these same wives come out to defend them and stand by them with solidarity. On human relationship scale, shouldn’t these betrayed wives be giving them the boot much before the court of law? Shouldn’t they be blasting them and deserting them in their misdeeds considering that the misdeed in question was a big infidelity to them in the first place?
Let’s first take off the rose tinted glasses. Oh who are fooling here? Certainly these forgiving wives have not got an attack of Gandhigiri. And surely it’s not about the 7 ‘Feras’ and the seven vows. Oh come on! He’s already broken the vows big time! So what is it, which propels these women? What makes them suddenly see the goodness in their fallen husbands? What makes them take their side despite knowing that what he did was not only a crime but also a betrayal to their relationship? Don’t they slip the support-sympathy mask even in private and see eye to eye with their own sense of morality. Is the definition of morality a loose one in today’s time? Or is it morality seen from where you are standing? Do we even have absolute morality now? After all! Isn’t right, right and wrong, wrong; even if you gaze from any perspective? Molesting a 13yr old girl by a 45plus officer in authority cannot be considered not immoral, any way we look at this. There shouldn’t be a contest here.
Yet what makes these wives twist the moral code of humanity and see their husbands in a favorable light?
Is it the victim syndrome? By making them vulnerable victims are these women out to get a strange hold and control over their once powerful husbands? Are they accomplices? Or are they exploiting the unfortunate situation to their benefit by getting the man down on his knees and taking the high road themselves? After all we did see a repentant Bill Clinton doggedly supporting his wife in her meteoric rise in politics afterwards. Is it that after this fall from grace, it is the forgiving wife who wears the pants in the relationship?
Or is it about the money, honey! These wayward losers are rich. So is it possible they purchase the forgiveness and support of their wives?
Which ever way it is, the complexities of a man woman relationship specially within the power loaded and mind control institution of marriage, have bended the definition of accepted norms of morality and the sense of right and wrong. Or maybe the burden of carrying on is shifted to that flag bearer of ethics and culture, the great Indian middle class.
Ps: quoting Dante here: ‘the hottest place in hell is reserved for those who remain neutral in times of moral conflict’. Dante, what about those who side with the immoral?
