Campaign ‘Reservation Express’ In Aligarh

Talking to Agratoday.in Shabnam Hashmi, group leader said "wherever we went there has been tremendous response and an upsurge. Women in villages across India said they want reservation and it would definitely help their empowerment. Our group includes Muslim and Dalit women also." Talking about opposition from the Yadavs, Shabnam said these "people have lost the ground, their arguments are flawed. We are opposed to any kind of interference and mediation by the conservative religious heads. Let women decide what is good for them. This mission is also to challenge the die hards and fundamentalists in every religion, who think women should stay at home and just produce children."

Shahjad Alam, local organizer told Agratoday.in, "Three groups have moved out to cover the whole country, on a mass contact drive, by road. The group members are holding interactive sessions with local women's groups and mobilizing support for the bill."

In response to the opposition to the Women’s Reservation Bill by various political groups and sections of conservative religious leaders Anhad supported by over 200 organizations has initiated a nation- wide campaign called, “Campaign Reservation Express”. The campaign reasserts the women’s resolve to fight for 33 percent reservation. Campaign managers said they would not like religious leaders to meddle in women’s lives and interfere with this revolutionary initiative.

The Campaign “Reservation Express” was flagged off from Jhansi on May 20th. Three women groups (caravans) were flagged off by Subhashini Ali, Annie Raja and Qamar Hashmi. Women who are traveling include Bhanwari Devi (Rajasthan), Mohiti Jatav (Rajasthan), Sultana (Gujarat), Mussarrat (Mumbra, Mahasashtra). The karwans are led by young Anhad activists- Mansi Sharma, Seema Duhan, Manisha and Sania Hashmi.
