Anil Kapoor brings back memories of Tezaab’s Munna in 'Subedaar'

Is there any clear criterion that decides which films are released on OTT and which in theatres? If not, then releasing ‘Subedaar’ on OTT can only be called a mistake. Anil Kapoor, one of the producers, carries the entire film on his shoulders. Why then did he not take the risk of a theatrical release? Had he done so, audiences might not have disappointed him. In this film, watching him instantly brings back memories of Tezaab’s 'Munna'.

The film constantly evokes nostalgia. Seeing Saurabh Shukla reminds one of his 'Bandit Queen' days. After thrashing the villain, Anil Kapoor’s way of stating his home address recalls Amitabh Bachchan’s iconic “Naam…, Vijay Dinanath Chauhan…” dialogue from 'Agneepath'. There are a couple of other such moments, too. For instance, during a fight scene, a car behind Kapoor has 'Munna' written on it.

Radhika Madan shines in her few scenes as the daughter. Portrayed as brave like her father, she makes the most of her role. The film is packed with action and emotion. When the father’s and daughter’s struggles converge at the end, a powerful climax emerges, further spiced up by Nana Patekar’s impactful cameo.

Mona Singh plays a lady don with flair. Seeing Anil Kapoor on video call, her 'flirting' makes it clear that "this is the original Mona Singh…, not the actor". Faizal Malik impresses as a villain; Bollywood has found a strong actor who can excel in such roles.

In a special appearance, Khushboo Sundar, playing Anil Kapoor's wife, exudes a 'pickle-like' aroma every time she appears on screen. This 'pickle-fragrance' exudes a unique aroma of romance.

Another highlight is Aditya Rawal. Son of Paresh Rawal, he looks menacing and unhinged, clearly showing promise to carry forward his father’s legacy.

The ending suggests a sequel is on the way. If the same scale of production is maintained, the next instalment deserves a theatrical release.
