In his presidential remarks, AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof. PK Abdul Azis said that man has always been moving and civilizations shift because of their migration for employment and knowledge.
He said that Islam came to Kerala first and ruler of Kerala embraced Islam. He hoped that the deliberations of this national seminar would provide an exciting exercise for the young minds for the study of culinary terms.
Prof. Anjani Kumar Sinha of Delhi University, Prof. BN Patnaik of IIT, Kanpur, Prof. Terrence J. O’ Brian of Delhi University also addressed the inaugural session. Apart from the dignitaries, teachers and research scholars presented their papers.
The Chairman of the Department of Linguistics, Prof. S. Imtiaz Hasnain presented an introduction of the topic of the seminar and explained its objectives. Scholars from across India presented their papers on culinary terms. The papers discussed the various historical and socio-cultural dimensions of the culinary terms as used in various Indian languages spoken in East, West, North and South India.
The Seminar shed light on how culinary terms form an archive of linguistic knowledge system. In the workshop, research scholars of the Linguistics Department presented a comparison of culinary terms in various Indian languages and Persian and Arabic with the help of synchronic data.
Prof. KS Mustafa gave the welcome address and Masood A. Beg gave an outline of the Seminar.
